The Herdade

Proud to carry our story onto our friends tables.

Located in the heart of Alentejo, in Alter do Chão

Herdade Papa Leite goes back to the 18th century. Landmarks of the past times are still visible today, to remind us of our history.

Filipe Barreiros Cardoso, passionate about the area and the property bought Herdade Papa Leite to fulfil his long time wish of developing products of great quality. This dream was only possible to fulfil due to the tireless support of his family and team.  For centuries, the main activity at the Herdade was the cultivation of cereals, olive groves, holm and cork oak. Developing from the foundations already laid out, Filipe reactivated the reproduction of cattle, firstly by reviving the existing, yet scarce, Alentejo cattle and later introducing the Aberdeen-Angus breed.

The Herdade has been revivified and nowadays the 320 hectares not only breed cattle but also produce great wine and olive oil.

With time the winery activity gained traction, and it has thus far proved to be a formidable adventure. A window from which one can see the Herdade, the families that have passed through it and, above all else, a window into the dreams of Filipe and his own family.
